Gas switching technology: Economic attractiveness for chemical looping applications and scale up experience to 50 kWth

Gas switching technology (GST) was introduced to facilitate operation and scale-up of pressurized chemical looping-based technologies thus bringing the expected benefits reducing costs energy penalty CO2 capture. GST has so far been applied generate heat/power, hydrogen, syngas, oxygen using fossil fuel gas (but also from biomass for negative emissions) with integrated capture at minimal generating over 50 publication studies demonstrating technical feasibility quantifying potential cost savings. In contrast conventional looping, inherently avoids solids circulation by alternating oxidizing conditions into a single fluidized bed reactor an carrier, removing many challenges that hinder technology. successfully demonstrated combustion, steam/dry methane reforming, water splitting, different carriers, showing ease under both atmospheric achieving high products separation efficiency. This paper summarises completed on Switching Technology covering experimental demonstration (including experience kWth cluster), process modelling techno-economics, highlighting advantages disadvantages discussing way forward.
